BIRTH
DYNAMICS - is an opportunity to learn, through
demonstrations with baby and pelvis models as well as videos,
about common
birth experiences, both healthy and questionable, and to
discharge one’s own shock around these issues by
trading STR sessions with others in the class. Practitioners
are then better able to recognize and work with birth and
pre and peri-natal trauma in their clients.
|
BODY
PSYCHOTHERAPY - How
your feelings and thoughts are linked to specific parts
of the body and different illnesses. The intimate
relationship which exists between your mind and your body.
Becoming aware of how unresolved issues affect your health
and what is needed to bring about your healing. Discovering
how breath awareness, movement, and complementary healing
techniques can stimulate emotional and psychological healing.
|
CRANIOSACRAL
BIODYNAMICS - A subtle manipulative science
of palpating the movements and flows of the highly intelligent
craniosacral system. By working skillfully with
this intelligence, the practitioner aims for unrestricted
flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which bathes the brain and
nervous system and rocks and enlivens each bone, organ
and body tissue. It is a whole body therapy, as
restrictions to that system may occur anywhere. This
therapy is useful for head and spine trauma/pain from
birth, accidents, abuse, surgery, drugs, depression,
learning and behavior problems, stroke, and psychological
stress. CSB also enhances function of the glands,
organs, and muscular-skeletal system. Sharon's
style of Cranial work focuses on assisting craniosacral
fluid to build potency for self-correction. She
assists the release of shock from fluids throughout the
body.
|
EMOTIONAL
FREEDOM TECHNIQUE (EFT)- to tap on acupuncture
meridian points while focusing on an emotional or physical
health challenge, to clear the energy pathways to allow
healing. Clients can download instructions from emofree.com to use the tapping on their own, with further professional
guidance if necessary.

ENERGY
MEDICINE- Energy medicine shows you how to understand and work
with your body’s reservoir of electromagnetic
and more subtle energies to
increase your vitality, identify and correct energy
imbalances that keep you from
being at your best, and enhance your health and your state of mind.
Sharon Porter has
been teaching Energy medicine since the early 1970's, when she began teaching
Hatha
Yoga in the SF Bay Area. She co-founded and taught
in the first large school of Polarity Therapy,
which expanded to several locations along the
West Coast. She then taught on her own in California
and later Colorado, developing her own approach
to healing and conciousness. Her sensitivity
to
energy patterns and fields allows her to track
what is going on in the client. When she gives
a lecture-demonstration in front
of a class or conference audience, she interprets
the field patterns that are moving her hands
so that others can see the connection between
our
energy and our thoughts.
In
the course of 35 years of study, teaching and working with
clients, she has integrated the work of many great teachers
with whom she has personally studied, including Rama Jyoti
Vernon (founder of Yoga Journal and Yogas Teachers Assn),
Dr. Randolph Stone (founder of Polarity Therapy), Dr. Ray
Castellino (founder of BEBA - Birthing Evolution, Birthing
Awareness), Dr. William Emerson (pre and Per-Natal Psychology
Assn.), Dr. Ann Wigmore (live foods), Dr. Brent Baum (founder
of Holographic Memory Resolution), Dr. Stanley Kelleman,
DC (hose books include Emotional Anatomy), Dr. Vasant Ladd
(Ayurvedic Medicine), Pat Ogden(Hakomi Integrative Somatics),
John Upledger (Upledger Institute), and many other esteemed
colleagues.
Sharon's
Certifications include Somatic experiencing Practioner
(SEP), Registered Polarity Practioner (RPP), Registered
Craniaosacral Therapist (RCST®), Yoga Teacher. She is also
a Yoga Therapist and exercise physiologist and incorporates
many traditions such as Pilates, Restructuring, Posture,
Power Walking, Ball Exercises, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, and influences
from several styles of Yoga.

HEALTH
WAVE INSTITUTE -
Our name and our philosophy.
The Name, Health Wave, is meaningful for us for in several
ways. The movement toward healthy lifestyle choices,
preventive measures, and energy
therapies has now reached the mainstream. The natural health wave has
caught on. HWI teaches that there is great healing power and intelligence
within us that can be accessed for healing through skill, training, intuition
and connection to spirit. We support what is variously called complementary
or integrative medicine (CAM), Energy Medicine, and what some call Energy
Therapies, in which we use high-tech hands, sensitivity and wisdom.
When our energy is available to us, it moves in Waves, including the
deeper, slower waves of the cranial Tides. It warbles in a wave pattern
like a bird’s song. It has continuity and midline. It arises out
of the stillness of the power of the sea, is driven by the winds which
arise from the horizon and reach us with the Intelligence of Spirit that
is beyond time and which connect us to the deepest aspects of ourselves.
Energy is an experience that lets us know we are alive. It’s the
tingle after a brisk walk, the warmth in our chest when we are touched
by tender feelings, the inspiration that comes from our Source. Energy
is expressed as the in-breath and the out-breath of life, in continual
phases of contraction and expansion, as the waving loop of the infinity
sign.
It’s the sunlight shimmering on the water, or the adamantine particles
of light that fill and surround every molecule of our precious universe.
In the Bible it is referred to as the Breath of Life.
We focus on the Health in a client’s system, rather than on his
or her Pathology. Symptoms and sad stories are listened to and recorded
for use in therapy, but they are not the main focus of the treatment,
because we know that problems are just a sign that the body’s energy
system is out of alignment. We access Health as the juice needed to power
the client’s own internal healing intelligence. When we locate
blocked energy, we look for the kernel of Health within that block, and
as we watch it and support it, it begins to dance.

In PRIVATE
SESSIONS, Sharon usually combines several
modalities. Bodywork ranges from the lightest of touches
to deep contacts into densely crystalized areas, to
rocking movements. Exercises are given as needed, in
sessions and as homework. Clients experience a profound
sense of relaxation and connectedness that they describe
as feeling whole, new and very alive.
Sharon
has always been fascinated by the body-mind relationship
and has developed her own unique ways of bringing her
clients to greater understanding and empowerment. Treatments
are often filled with laughter as well as education and
deep cellular exploration. it is not uncommon to release
shock, anesthesia and other drugs that have been inhibiting
the system. Sensation tracking and dialoguing then clears
the cellular memory and brings about deep empowerment,
with emphasis on enhancing the client's strengths and
resources.
In
a session with Sharon, you will feel like a partner on
a grand adventure to explore and appreciate the wonder
of life. You do not have to have a serious problem. You
can simply enjoy the experience of your own energy system
flowing under the hands of a master practitioner.
Sharon's
experience includes work with phisical and emotional
pain from incest, abuse, birth trauma, auto accidents,
injuries, arthritis, drug abuse, depression, headaches,
back and foot problems, dental work, and stuck emotional
patterns. She is referred clients by psychologists, psychotherapists,
acupuncturists, chiropractors, healers, intuitives and
M.D.'s and is happy to work with the referring practitioner
for the good of the client.
Sharon
has trained practitioners in several countries to use
movement, sound and breath along with contacts and pressures
that take advantage of the natural leverages of the body. She
is expert in Hatha Yoga, Polarity Exercises, and other
jewels she has picked up from clients and teachers. Her
Somatic Trauma Resolution work includes the use of large
gymnastic balls and a Tuning Board that clients often
use at home. Additional
areas Sharon incorporates into her private sessions and
teaching include gestalt therapy, diet, herbs, homeopathics,
flower essences, humor and inner child work.

POST TRAUMATIC STRESS SYNDROME or
PTSS - Trauma
defined as anything that is overwhelming to the nervous
system of an individual, so it may include birth, drugs,
surgery, accidents and injuries, emotional or physical
shock, abuse, or even discouraging messages about ourselves.

POLARITY
THERAPY- employs bodywork, energy-efficient exercises,
foods, body/mind awareness and profound understanding of
how the body’s electromagnetic fields function. Polarity's
aim is to locate and dissolve energy blockages that affect
health at every level. Polarity is extremely efficient
for dissolving pain and depression, and for turning around
chronic conditions. It has the additional advantage
of moving energy so palpably that the client very quickly
experiences him/herself as an energy being who can make
dramatic shifts as the frequency of the body lifts. This direct
experience gives people hope, enthusiasm, connection, and
a “spring in the step” as well as support for
changing one’s diet, lifestyle, and attitudes.
Polarity was developed from 1920-1973 by Dr. Randolph Stone, an osteopath,
naturopath and chiropractor. A highly-respected practitioner, Dr. Stone
researched the energetic basis for all natural healing processes, studying
and travelling widely. His contribution was mainly to the understanding
of the electromagnetic energy fields that flow around and through humans
and how these are affected by bodywork, exercises and lifestyle choices.
He diagramed these energy fields, geometric and reflex patterns, and
resonances between different body areas. He applied this research to
mind and soul as well as body, using his understanding in self-care methods,
therapeutic foods, bodywork, and energy exercises that move blocked energy
and redistribute it toward balance and healing. The bodywork includes
rocking moves, light contacts, and deep tissue bodywork. Locating blocks
and palpating the energy system is included in this course, whereas some
Polarity courses teach only a series of contacts. Sharon Porter studied
with Dr. Stone in 1973, when he was 83 years young. Porter co-founded
and taught in the first large school of Polarity Therapy, from 1974-86.
She teaches some of the Energy Exercises in all Health Wave courses,
as breaks from the more sedentary aspects of lectures and bodywork.

SELF-CARE: For
25 years Sharon has been a passionate advocate for Self-Care
- everything you can do for yourself to move energy, correct
posture, enhance immune function, strengthen and balance
the spine, soften the feet, aid digestion, and take power
that has imploded into the solar plexus and expand it outward
into flexible boundaries, creativity and joy. She
has trained practitioners in several countries to use movement,
sound and breath along with contacts and pressures that
take advantage of the natural leverages of the body. She
is expert in Hatha Yoga, Polarity Exercises, and other
jewels she has picked up from clients and teachers. Her
Trauma Resolution work includes the use of large gymnastic
balls and a Tuning Board (for recovering balance) that
clients often use at home. Additional areas Sharon
incorporates into her private sessions and teaching include
gestalt therapy, diet, herbs, homeopathics, flower essences,
humor and inner child work.
A recent addition to the Self-Care area is the Emotional Freedom Technique,
which teaches clients to tap on acupuncture meridian points while focusing
on an emotional or physical health challenge, to clear the energy pathways
to allow healing. Clients can download instructions from emofree.com
to use the tapping on their own, with further professional guidance
if necessary. (more)

SOMATIC
TRAUMA RESOLUTION (STR) - The latest approach
to healing trauma involves connecting aspects of story,
emotions or symptoms to curiosity about the sensations
going on in the body. As the client is supported
to stay curious, neural pathways open up and even PTSD
can be gradually discharged. Resiliency, creativity,
sexuality, and function return.
Please note that the goal is resiliency and function, not to relive
the trauma. STR is an effective way to prevent chronic problems from
developing, or to release causes once illness has set in. A few STR
sessions after an accident can save years of psychotherapy, chiropractic,
and drugs. You don’t have to wait until Post-Traumatic
Symptom Disorder (PTSD) has set in. Basic STR skills, such as becoming
curious about our bodily sensations, are helpful to anyone.
Besides
the articles on this site, we also suggest Waking the Tiger:
Healing Trauma by Peter Levine (Link to Amazon.com). Sharon’s
STR course will in Spring 2005 be available on DVD and
VHS in HWI’s Distance Learning program, which includes
lectures and demonstration sessions illustrating principles
of good trauma work.

THE
PROCESS WORKSHOP - The
Process Workshop is an opportunity to receive treatment in a
small group where healing is in
both group and individual forms and participants are educated
and inspired by each other’s process. |
TRAUMA - Trauma
is defined as anything that is overwhelming to the
nervous system of an individual, so it may include
birth, drugs, surgery, accidents and injuries, emotional
or physical shock, abuse, or even discouraging messages
about ourselves. STR is an effective way to prevent
chronic problems from developing, or to release causes
once illness has set in.Trauma can cause havoc to
one's health, which may include poor digestion, pain,
reenactment of the trauma, rigidity, chronic conditions,
psychological and relationship problems, and more.
